Sun, Blue Skies and Fixed Gear Bikes

Montag, November 17th, 2008

Wow the weather continues to be great! It was good to have Ollie (a fixed gear guy from Australia) here for visit who I cycled with through the city on fixed gear in this beautiful weather. We rode a full sightseeing tour from the CBD with the World Trade Tower 3 (highest building of Beijing) and the CCTV Headquarter (double-Z building) then down Changan Boulevard to the Tiananmen Square then around the Forbidden City to Beihai Park (with the white Buddha Temple) then up to the Drum and Bell Tower then around the Houhai and Xihai Lakes then through small Hutongs to Beilouguyiang and Nanlouguxiang. It was nice weather to sit outside for lunch, but it did get chilly for the hands during the later afternoon.

Ollie and his 4 friends are actually traveling all the way from Australia by land and sea to get to the UN climate change talks in Poznan (Poland) in December. They are members of the Australian Youth Climate Coalition. You can read about their unique journey on facebook. We had a great vegetarian dinner and then all went for some juggling and acro balance.

New Fixed Gear Bike

Dienstag, November 11th, 2008

A new member of our Beijing Fixed Gear crew has put together his track bike. Jack bought a nice Keirin Vivalo frame and after a long search found hubs and rims and all other parts. Here is a picture of it that he sent me today:

Tianjin Fixed Gear

I met today with the whole Tianjin Fixed Gear scene: Mike.

Tianjin Fixed Gear Crew

He does not know anybody else in Tianjin that rides fixed gear so he usually rides with other cyclists. I brought my pink fixie on the high speed train (329km/h) to Tianjin so that we could ride together. It was awkward to ride through Tianjin at rush hour because the bicycle lanes actually got clogged up. I have never experienced a bicycle traffic jam in Beijing! Can you imagine that it took us 2 green light phases of the traffic light for us to make it across due to the bike congestion? I think there are more cyclists on the road in Tianjin than in Beijing. And the cycling lanes are more narrow.

Two Fixed Gear Bikes

When I was waiting for my 30 minute train back to Beijing we sat on the side of the train station piazza. Strangely enough it takes longer to get to the Beijing South train station from my house than it takes by train all the way from Tianjin. And the train ticket is not much more expensive.

After I rode on the back wheel and then surfed my bike and we immediately had a crowed around us. They left hardly any personal space – as always. They were all very interested in us two foreigners with the strange bikes.

Fixed Gear and Chinese Improv Show

Sonntag, November 2nd, 2008

As the weather was so nice today I spent the afternoon in the park rock climbing. After that I met with 2 friends for bike riding. Unfortunately other fixed gear riders had no time or were injured. We cycled to the Olympic forest hoping that we can ride inside. But it seems to be fenced off really well, the gate closes at 5pm every day and no bikes are allowed inside. We cycled a loop around it on a freshly paved cycling path which suddenly turned dark (it felt like we were outside of Beijing) and then turned onto the 5th ring road (highway). The random bricks or line of bricks with some missing on the side lane of the highway was quite surreal. Then that lane just disappeared and after cycling on a highway kind of street for a bit then suddenly we saw again a beautifully paved bike lane again on the other side of some bushes. We cycled over huge empty Olympic parking lots with great surface for skidding and random small ditches and also some deep and quite wide sudden ditches. I was positively surprised to find out that we could cycle on the Olympic Green and play around on our bikes between the Birds Nest and the Water Cube Olmypic stadiums. That was awesome!

Tonight was the first show of the Chinese Improv Group. They did a great job. Especially the Olympic Ear Wax Pulling Event (last picture) was very funny.

Death Prom Interactive Theater Event

Freitag, Oktober 31st, 2008

Finally it is Halloween! We are hosting the Glendale High School Prom of 1958. The doors open and the big band starts to play some swing music. [All pictures are courtesy of other participants, none of these pictures are mine. A lot of pictures are on facebook]

The principal of the high school is all excited about the prom:

Then I did a special trick cycling performance. I tried to do something in the lines of the deadly topic of this „Death Prom“ using dark music. All these pictures are from fellow actors or audience members. Thanks to all of you. I made a webalbum with those pictures.

Then zombies started showing up.

But after a big battle scene all the zombies were defeated – at least that is what it seemed like at first…

…but they then all got up again and it turned out we were all dead!

Then it was just party and pictures 🙂

After this very successful interactive theater event our producer Anna seemed to be very re-leaved and danced like crazy.

Unfortunately I had fallen off my bike during the warm up before the show and then the printing company guy came 2 hours too late to bring me my flyers. Other than that I enjoyed the show!

Trick Cycling Performance and Ole Soccer Opening

Samstag, Oktober 18th, 2008

Today I again did a performance in the Ditan Park. It was still for the Beijing Book Festival. I think it is great to inspire people to read books by doing tricks on a bike. As I do not have a camera right now these pictures were taken by two of my colleagues.

Some more really nice pictures from a friend are here on flickr. That is the difference of a nice SLR compared to small pocket size cameras.

Here are some more impressions of the book festival:

My friend brought his beautiful old track bike. But he installed a free wheel single speed on it. Old bikes are just very beautiful. Too bad I currently do not have a nice camera.

Then went to the Ole soccer venue opening party. They have 2 indoor fields and 2 outdoor fields. Plus a soon to be opened climbing wall and bouldering room. The indoor climbing wall is 10 meters high. Today it was already painted yellow and had an easy climbing route and an overhang route screwed in. I climbed the overhang route which was not difficult but fun. They have nice La Sportiva rock climbing shoes for rental. I cannot wait for the opening.

After that we went for a nice North Korean barbeque dinner.

BJ Fixed Gear Ride

Dienstag, Oktober 14th, 2008

Tonight we met up for a fixed gear ride. We were 5 riders. We rode along Changan Boulevard and to the National Theater. Jack took some really nice pictures. Then we did a loop via the Financial Street and back East to Snalitun. On the way back we stopped to have some Xinjiang food with lamb skewers and nan. We chained all our bikes together to make this bike pile:
