Bai Hua Shan Road Cycling

Samstag, Juni 27th, 2009

Today was the 10th big ride of the year organized by the Beijing Peloton. It was a special one as it was the first MOB (Mountain Bikers of Beijing) and Peloton Road Cyclist Joint Ride. Tom had written in the Trek newsletter: To make it official we have adopted the following slogan-esque and easy to remember name: “Glorious Unity Purpose MOB and Peloton Joint Ride To Make Harmonious Society At Bai Hua Shan To Wanr Wanr With Bikes: One Country, Two Bike Systems”. Amazingly, the Chinese version of this slogan is only 4 characters long. 😉

We started at 05:50 a.m. at the TREK Chaoyang store. Bai Hua Shan is located 100km west of Beijing and is situated along a slow and meandering mountain national road number 108. Driving there already took us 3 hours as the that national road was under construction most of the way.

But we all wanted to ride on Beijing’s highest mountain summit road. The Bai Hua Shan Loop had a total distance of 100km for the fast A riders. It was an out and back loop and started at 200m altitude. The road went continuously up for 30km length towards 2000m elevation (6500ft)!

Beijing Peloton Cycling to the Foot of Bai Hua Shan

The first part of the road to the foot of the hill was not such a nice ride. All the villages seem to live from coal mining and huge mountains of shredded coal are everywhere. All the old trucks on the road do not just annoy us as they drive roughly the same speed as we cycle but they were all loaded with black coal. On the right side of this picture you see the edge of such a random coal hill.

Well there was a gate at roughly 1300m where we had to stop for a while.

We were all happy that we did continue our ride up this beautiful narrow road that soon turned into many switchbacks. They were really steep that I often had to stand up to get more force onto the pedals.

At the top of Bai Hua Shan mountain there is a monastery. This is the highest temple in Beijing province. There was a monk sitting with us at this bell. We took a picture for one of our sponsors Powerbar.

On the way back back down we could enjoy the beautiful view. I stopped to take many pictures. It happened twice that I was so amazed by the view standing (but still sitting on my bike) to take a picture that I just fell over and could not get out of the clip pedals. On this picture you can see part of the road that we cycled up and back down. It goes all the way to the center of the picture.

Beautiful View from Bai Hua Shan Mountain

All the pictures of this beautiful ride are uploaded to my website. When I arrived back at the mini-bus our driver just started laughing at me. I asked what is up but he did not explain. But other people told me that may face was quite black. And when I got home I had to shower twice to get all the black coal dust off of me.

Anna’s Birthday Dinner

Samstag, Mai 30th, 2009

Our local theater director and producer as well as actress Anna had invited for her birthday to a vegetarian, or actually vegan restaurant. We had vegan fish, vegan sausages, vegan sweet and sour pork, vegan Beijing Duck amongst other dishes.

If you have a gathering of actors there is always some spontaneous acting. This night is was Anna and Kris performing some funny slow motion fight scenes. This one was Anna smacking a bottle on Kris’s head. But as our experiences Becs commented: „If you ever saw or had been in a London bar fight you would know that you first need to smack the beer bottle on the table so that the glass breaks. It has much more effect smacking the broken bottle then on somebody’s head“.

BBQ Afternoon

Samstag, Mai 30th, 2009

Friends had invited for a barbeque on there new rooftop terrace of their new apartment outside East 3rd ring road. And it was a superb day for great views due to the strong wind making the sky very clear and blue. But it was quite hard to get the fire starting with all the wind. And we did have minor sparks light up some cardboard outside the grill.

Beijing CBD District

We could see the CCTV headquarter building with the burnt down building to its right side.

CCTV Building and Guomao Tower 3

And the mountains were visible in the West and North. Here the view to the West:

West Mountains and Beijing Skyline

And to the North West we could even see the top of the Dragon Building of the Olympic Village as well as the mountains I usually cycle in.

And this is their garden: The Chaoyang Park. And still here you see mountains in the background.

Many people brought nice wine as some work in the wine industry in Beijing. I was planning to go on a bike ride later so I unfortunately could hardly try any of those nice bottles. Too bad.

BJ Fixed Gear Night

Dienstag, Mai 26th, 2009

This is becoming a regular event: The Tuesday night „Meet in the Tunnel“ night fixed gear tricks and ride. But maybe because it is summer there are so many more cyclists on the streets of Beijing. And even late night in this bike tunnel it was very busy. Today the amount of electric bikes and motorized tricycles was unbelieveabe and some of them were riding at very high speeds. It was hard to do tricks on our bikes. And yes, one guy did hit one of our guys doing his tricks. It was Xiao Shu. But he did not get hurt, just dirty from falling onto the ground. But he got washed off by his girlfriend. I only took some pictures and uploaded them to a webalbum.

Ines Brunn Performance for Greener China

Dienstag, Mai 5th, 2009

I found a post on this forum. The person talks about the Beijing Radio and other companies events to promote a more sustainable lifestyle and cycling. It talks about an event on April 26th where I did a trick bike performance for a greener China. Here is the comment:

Beautiful Colorful Fixed Gear Bikes

Sonntag, April 26th, 2009

The BJ fixed gear guys had set up a ride for today. I met with them, but did not ride with them as I had fallen off my bike just a few hours earlier.

NIKE Space and Stunt Roll off my Fixie

Freitag, April 24th, 2009

NIKE has a space in the Beijing 798 Art District. I went there to have a look today. It is the energy hall.

NIKE Space in 798 Beijing

Currently it is used as an exhibition hall and for playing basketball. It could be a cool place to do some trick cycling. Maybe I can find some guys to train there with me. Or maybe we could even play bike polo there if any of the Beijing fixed gear guys are interested.

NIKE Basketball Court

On my way back home I flew over the handlebars of my blue track bike for the first time. I was riding on the bike lane and had a green light when a cyclist (riding over the red light) came from the right. I thought he wanted to fully cross the street so I kept my line of riding and wanted to let him pass in front of me. He unexpectedly did a full stop right in front of me. So I tried to brake and just went flying right over the handlebars as well as flying over his back wheel and then landing with a nice roll. I started scolding him that if he wants to run over a red light he should just do it. If not, then he should just stop like all the civilized people at the bike stopping line and wait for the lights to turn green. He said he was so sorry and said he will never do that again. The whole bunch of cyclists waiting at that stopping line were all staring at me with their eyes wide open. I afterwards realized that my flight and stunt roll must have looked really impressive.

That reminded me of my friend who had a tricycle guy (that was riding in the wrong direction) almost crash into him. In the process of trying to brake the whole tricycle fell over. Unfortunately his load was beer, so that meant then that around 200 glass bottles with beer were spilled over the whole street. What a mess! Some people think riding in San Francisco with the steep hills is dangerous. But riding in flat Beijing has other sources of danger. And they are usually very unexpected.

Orphans Theater Play

Sonntag, April 19th, 2009

Today was the last day of the theater play „Orphans“ presented by the Beijing Actors Workshop (BAW) & Beijing International Theater Experience (BITE) produced by Anna Grace, directed by Peter Walters and staring Kris Chung, Ian Reed and Nick Ma. WOW. That was great acting! It was amazing. A very entertaining play that was professionally presented. I really enjoyed it. Looking forward to their next performances like the Spring Workshop Finale Festival May 14th to 17th (7:30 in Penghao Theater) and Shakespeare’s famous comedy „A Midsummer Night’s Dream“ held June 11-14 and 18-21
