Beautiful Colorful Fixed Gear Bikes

Sonntag, April 26th, 2009

The BJ fixed gear guys had set up a ride for today. I met with them, but did not ride with them as I had fallen off my bike just a few hours earlier.

NIKE Space and Stunt Roll off my Fixie

Freitag, April 24th, 2009

NIKE has a space in the Beijing 798 Art District. I went there to have a look today. It is the energy hall.

NIKE Space in 798 Beijing

Currently it is used as an exhibition hall and for playing basketball. It could be a cool place to do some trick cycling. Maybe I can find some guys to train there with me. Or maybe we could even play bike polo there if any of the Beijing fixed gear guys are interested.

NIKE Basketball Court

On my way back home I flew over the handlebars of my blue track bike for the first time. I was riding on the bike lane and had a green light when a cyclist (riding over the red light) came from the right. I thought he wanted to fully cross the street so I kept my line of riding and wanted to let him pass in front of me. He unexpectedly did a full stop right in front of me. So I tried to brake and just went flying right over the handlebars as well as flying over his back wheel and then landing with a nice roll. I started scolding him that if he wants to run over a red light he should just do it. If not, then he should just stop like all the civilized people at the bike stopping line and wait for the lights to turn green. He said he was so sorry and said he will never do that again. The whole bunch of cyclists waiting at that stopping line were all staring at me with their eyes wide open. I afterwards realized that my flight and stunt roll must have looked really impressive.

That reminded me of my friend who had a tricycle guy (that was riding in the wrong direction) almost crash into him. In the process of trying to brake the whole tricycle fell over. Unfortunately his load was beer, so that meant then that around 200 glass bottles with beer were spilled over the whole street. What a mess! Some people think riding in San Francisco with the steep hills is dangerous. But riding in flat Beijing has other sources of danger. And they are usually very unexpected.

Fede’s Party

Montag, April 20th, 2009

Fede had just come back from Uganda where he had been teaching teenagers and children how to juggle and do acrobatics as well as putting a show together for them so that they could earn money. That is a project done by an Italian non-profit organization. And now he is off to Italy and Europe, leaving tomorrow. We will miss him.

So we had a party for him. Oli was DJ-ing some nice tunes, a lot of jugglers and friends came and Kris came and brought his new carbon track bike (credits to Risteard for the picture).

Fixed Gear Get Together

Dienstag, April 14th, 2009

Tonight we had again our weekly tunnel Beijing fixed gear get together. I had never tried standing on the raiser handlebars of my pink Cinelli track bike, that seems just very scary. Tonight I put bullhorn handlebars onto my pink bike. These bullhorn ones that I have are huge and aluminum. I do not like them as the aluminum is very soft and does not give that stable impression as full steel handlebars do. But nevertheless, I did try standing on them and it was fine. They did not break. I think I should get beautiful steel ones.

I also worked on my one legged wheely which now seems much easier than I thought. But I still did not try the shoulder stand on my pink bike. Somehow it seems more slippery than the bike Clancy had put together for me in SF. Unfortunately I have no camera so I could not take any pictures.

Beijing Fixed Gear Sunday Afternoon

Sonntag, April 12th, 2009

The Beijing Fixed gear guys met up at MESS shop in Dongsi to ride out towards the Olympic park. As it was a Sunday daytime the Olympic Green was filled with many tourists so we stayed outside – just slightly South.

Edsel Dilag Fixed Gear Pictures

Mittwoch, April 8th, 2009

For the filming of the fixed gear movie „Human Traffic“ we had Edsel Dilag come along with a nice Canon 5D and do some great shots. I made a small webalbum with some of his pictures. Here are a few:

And it is amazing how much the mind can influence our abilities: I can track stand forever. But trying to track stand on a wooden beam with the ocean water below didn’t work till I moved further back to see enough of the beam in front of me. And still then I could only track stand for a short while. Just because I knew that there was a possibility of me falling into the water with Clancy’s bike.

San Francisco Fixed Gear Filming

For the fixed gear movie shoot we went up to Twin Peaks. It was a spectacular view. More pictures.

Then we did drive over to Oakland for continued filming.

My friends Andrew and Chris stopped by for some „interesting“ chicken and waffles. Then we went out for some more fixed gear filming but we did not get to have any nice sunset due to the clouds.

San Francisco Fixed Gear Riding

Dienstag, April 7th, 2009

Finally in San Francisco! I arrived last night and had gone for some drinks with Clancy and Jason and other cyclists. But what was this today? Heavy rain in the morning??? But luckily it did actually stop raining around lunch time. Clancy had put together a small fixed gear bike for me to ride on and do tricks on while I was here. With the mountain bike fork it was possible to do bar spins. The handlebar stem was really cool despite it being really heavy.

We then went to a basketball court to do some tricks. Clancy is getting really good at some, e.g. the Keo-spin.

We then changed place and went to a car park to meet Justin. There was a nice view from there.

Then we changed to a differnt basketball court. It happened a few times that there were some drops of rain, but nothing serious.

And then I did a shoulder stand in the saddle for the first time on a bike other than my trick bike. And Justin actually filmed it. That was the first time ever that I did that. It would be cool if he keeps that in his movie.
