Rock Climbing in Franconian Switzerland

Mittwoch, September 9th, 2009

One of the best most famous places in Germany for rock climbing is Franconian Switzerland or Frankenjura. It is where I started climbing many years ago. We went to a cliff that I think I have never been to. Andi chose it because he had also never been there. At least that is what he thought till we arrived.

I still do not have a digital SLR anymore so these pictures are not nice. But I still wanted to upload some to give you an impression of the wonderful limestone of the Frankenjura.

Most of the crags in Franconia are in the forests. So in the summer it does not get too hot in the daytime. And you usually have to walk a bit to get to the climbing places.

After climbing we went to a very typical Franconian „Keller“. Those are the caves carved into the hills for storage of food and beverages in the ancient times. Today some of them sell some of their homemade food and have some beer benches so you can sit. So you can get typical things such as „Pressack“ (in Franconian dialect more pronounced like „Brressagg“), „Stadtwurst mit Musik“ and „Obazda“. And they sell dark and strong „Keller“ beer in baby mugs and normal mugs as seen in this picture:

Drinking Beer in a Franconian Keller

The normal mug is 1 liter of beer and the baby mug is only half a liter of beer. The view from this keller was magnificent:

Then we went to see the nearby“Vexierkapelle“ which is the only thing remaining from a castle originally built around the year 1146 A.D..

From there we had a beautiful view of the famous „Walbala“ where people had been living in the bronze age (about 1000 years B.C.) and was a very important spot for the Kelts (about 500 years B.C.). Till today people believe this spot has magical energy.

After dinner we went to the birthday party of one of my best friends. It was fine for me to drive as the good wine would be a waste for me to drink as all I can taste from wine is  the alcohol. I had not been aware almost all of the taste of wine is received through the nose.

Our Good Friend Andi

Dienstag, September 8th, 2009

Yeah, I finally got to see Andi again! He used to live in Beijing but moved back to Germany in the summer of 2006. I saw him once since then. Today he came to our home to stay with us for a night. It was great to see him after such a long time 🙂

And it was even better that after going to German hospitals and consulting doctors they agreed that I could start doing sports again after my head trauma. Finally. Just regarding my loss of smell they old me that it might take a while for it to come back, maybe even a few years… I will try to always wear a helmet when riding a bicycle in the streets.

Searching for Mushrooms

Sonntag, September 6th, 2009

After meeting a friend for breakfast my parents and I had lunch at a place that is only open on Saturday and Sunday for lunch and only has a limited number of dishes. I had traditional Franconian pork shoulder with skin and the Franconian potato dumplings but could not finish the huge portion. After that we set out into a nearby forest to search for mushrooms. It had been very dry the whole summer but just a few days ago my parents said it had rained and they were assuming that finally there would be some mushrooms.

We spread out and each of us were checking clearly the ground. In all directions of the forest. My father is on the below picture

But all we could find was a field of sunflowers.

And they were quite big.

Friedrichshafen Euro Bike

Samstag, September 5th, 2009

The weather was wonderful in Friedrichshafen. I could see the mountains of Switzerland from the couch where I was staying.

Friedrichshafen Mountain View

Today the bicycle trade show was really crowded as it was also open to teh public. But I still enjoyed meeting some of my old and new bike friends from around the world.

Afterwards I took the train to my parents place. That was a long and exhausting day.

Euro Bike Exhibition

Freitag, September 4th, 2009

I flew to Germany for some holiday and also to have a look at the European bicycle industry trade show in Friedrichshafen. The Euro Bike exhibition was quite big. A huge majority of the bikes were mountain or trekking bicycles. But I did find some nice track bikes. Like some traditional Italian style, like this beautiful one from Olmo:

Or newer designs like from Viva:

There was also a used bike polo bike displayed by the German Fixie company:

I made a webalbum with more pictures of nice track bikes. Also Cinelli had some beautiful steel frames on their booth:

It was also great to meet some old and new friends. And I was astonished that it is possible to do CouchSurfing in Friedrichshafen which is such a small city at the border of Germany.

Hospital Experience

Donnerstag, September 3rd, 2009

Due to the bike accident I had 2 weeks ago and my concussion I went to hospitals. First I went to the Chaoyang hospital that got extremely upgraded with the newest equipment before the Olympics. In the emergency area you buy a ticket for 5.5RMB so that you can talk to one of the emergency doctors. Then you just walk to one of them and stand „in line“. Well you just have to shove yourself forward and start talking to the doctor. The consultation „room“ of all the doctors is open so anyway everybody hears whatever you are discussing and some people are very interested in what a foreigner has. The doctor immediately sent me to get a computer tomography (CT) of my brain done. But you first need to pay the 288RMB for the CT – that is so amazingly cheap. After that is done you just go back to the doctor and try to shove yourself in front of the doctor again. As I said my jaw hurts and my ear hurts I had to pay another two times 5.5RMB to see the ear specialist as well as the dentist. The dentist said for the x-ray I would need to come again in the daytime. So the next day I went back to the dentist floor. Again the „treatment room“ with all the doctors is just a huge open room and you can walk up to any of the dentists and watch how he is currently working on somebodies teeth. It was 3pm and the dentist said it was too late to do an x-ray as they are going to close at 3:30pm. Wow, I am not sure how they do the x-ray. The CT took about 30 seconds. But whatever, I decided to try a different hospital.

This time I went to the Dongzhimen Hospital as it is said to be a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) Hospital. I wanted someone to look at my in total and not just one section at a time. So here you have to buy a „notebook“ for the doctors to write their notes for you. That was 0.5RMB. Then you have to pay to see the doctor which is 5RMB. Here the doctor is actually in a room, despite the fact that the door is open. He said that I have to go and see a brain doctor instead. But that doctor will only be back tomorrow. So he sent me back down get my doctor ticket refunded. So I got my 5RMB back. The next day I had to pay 14RMB because the brain doctor is a specialist. And there were many people waiting to get her consultation. So I read a book for about 1.5 hours to finally be almost called up. The doctor said with a shock in her eyes „oh, what is this, a foreigner, can somebody translate!!!“ to which I replied „Don’t worry I can speak Chinese“. So she looked at the CT listened to what I said and then said „mei shirrr“ in the typical Beijing dialect. And that means roughly „ahhh nothing“. She recommended that I rather see an ear and nose  doctor to look at my ear and also my nose. So I had to go back down and get my doctor ticket refunded (so I got my 14RMB back) and then buy a new ticket for a standard doctor 5RMB. The consultation room looked like 1950’s and I could not stand watching her treat the girl in front of me who had blood running out of her nose like a waterfall with mechanical devices. When it was my turn she had a look and then suggested that I come back the next day and do a hearing test. So she sent me back down to get my doctor ticket refunded and receive back my 5RMB. So despite the fact that it should be a TCM hospital I ended up in the „Western Style“ part and knew not more than before. So after more than 3 hours and being consulted by 3 doctors (and they wrote things in my notebook) I left the hospital only having spent 0.5RMB.

Then I decided to go and see my favorite doctor that actually runs a massage studio. When I entered he only said „Did you fall off your bike again?“ I had to smile. He sat done next to me, put his fingers on my wrist, closed his eyes and listened to my heart beat. Then he said I need acupuncture and special head massage. My main worry is that I realized that I do not smell anything since my concussion or trauma. And guess what he said? „Mei shirr“ 🙂

Beijing Millionaires and Rich Chinese

Mittwoch, September 2nd, 2009

I recently red some articles on the new rich society of China. The numbers are amazing. According to China Daily there are 143,000 multimillionaires and 8,800 billionaires in Beijing. Here is the link to the full article.

But on the other hand Beijing seems to be getting more expensive. The ratio of home price to income in Beijing is now 27 to 1, five times the international average according to an article published in China Daily.

Bike Parking and Bike Repair

Dienstag, September 1st, 2009

I do like that some – but unfortunately not many – building complexes have underground guarded free bicycle parking lots. Like this one on the East side of Beijing.

Beijing Bike Parking Lot

And I also love all the bike repair stations all over Beijing city. I hope they do not go out of business (like the guy with the white cap in the below picture) with the decreasing number of cyclists seen in Beijing. If everybody would just cycle one day more that would help. So for those not cycling at all: Get on out and try to bicycle in Beijing. Maybe that would help the car drivers to realize how it feels as a cyclist to get cut of by a car and maybe it would improve the driving skills.

Here is just a picture of the shop-to-be across of mine. The work is progressing.
