Ko Masuda Cycle Art

Mittwoch, November 18th, 2009

Today I arrived in Tokyo and was picked up by Harumi. We only dropped my luggage off at her place and then went directly to a vernissage. The Japanese artist, cyclist and monk as well as BFF friend Ko Masuda does art around cycling. He beautifully engraves handlebars and stems as well as paints on canvas and bicycles.

His paintings are all about bicycles or cycling. They are very energetic.

He is having an exhbition in Aoyama Tokyo. The Tokyo 2009 bicycle film festival (BFF) crew came to the art exhibition opening party. I took only a few pictures which I uploaded to a webalbum here.

And there are 2 full days of different movie screenings on Saturday and Sunday. The full event schedule details can be found here. Hope to see you in Tokyo!

Cycling Japan to China

Dienstag, November 17th, 2009

Today I had a very nice couple come into the Natooke shop. It was Sarah and Roly from Australia that had gone to Tokyo and bought 2 refurbished single speed mama-chari bicycles. Then they cycled all across Japan through all the mountains. They said they had never experienced such polite car drivers. They said they think Japan is the best country in the world to cycle. Then they took the ferry to South Korea and cycled there. The car drivers were not used to cyclists and did not really leave them much space on the roads. Then they came to China and cycled to Beijing and came by chance to my bicycle shop.

This was the last picture of them with their Japanese bicycles as they were on the way to dropping them off to be sold for a good purpose. They will continue their trip through Asia a little bit later and they were considering riding old durable Flying Pigeons. I wish you guys good luck and lots of fun! Keep your love for cycling!

TED in Beijing

Freitag, November 13th, 2009

Do you know about TED? Well if not then you need to check out their website: www.ted.com

Today was the first TED event in Beijing. As it was an independently organized event but with the TED license it was called TEDxBeijing. And I was selected as a speaker! I was so excited when I heard that news on October 30th!!! Since then I was in an extreme speech preparation mode. I re-wrote my speech about 8 times. There were too many topics to talk about. It was hard for me to chose. In the end I chose the title: Changes of Perception. I was wanting people to change their perception about bicycles and re-consider to ride. Especially in Beijing.

Cars are the Current Status Symbol in China

Modern Building in Beijing Reject Bicycles and have no Bicycle Parking

And to inspire people that cycling is not just about pedaling I also did some tricks on my artistic bicycle. Of course… 🙂

Ines Brunn Tricks on a Bicycle at TEDxBeijing

There was some pictures of it on tech.sina.com of me speaking as well as doing tricks on my bicycle. Also I found some pictures of the event on flickr. And more pictures.

This was such a great event! So many great speakers and interesting topics. It showed the different perspectives of Beijing and China. We had live online screening of all the speeches. And the videos will be edited and hopefully soon uploaded. I am looking forward to that. Now I first need to get a good nights sleep!

There was also an article on the 236z.com website. And probably also on others…

ECO HERO)①
10/22/2009 12:00 AM

In China, almost everyone knows how to ride a bike. However, along with the development of technology, more and more people are beginning to have their own cars and bikes are no longer as popular as before.
Gases emitted from car exhaust pipes create serious air pollution within cities. Bearing this in mind, a number of ecologically spirited people are now choosing to ride bikes instead of driving. Ines Brunn is a special one of these people.
Some people race their bikes, some people cruise on their bikes. Other people simply use their bikes to get from A to B. Ines Brunn doesn’t. When she gets on her bike, she is a gymnast, contortionist, and acrobat all rolled into one. Today you can appreciate the awesome, breathtaking bike tricks done by this amazing cyclist cum athlete.
Kathy Yin has her first attempt at riding a monocycle. Will she manage it? She realizes that riding bicycle is both cool and environmentally friendly. What about you? Have you been on the static bikes at the gym this week? Why not ride your bike to the gym instead? And enjoy the warm sunshine and fresh air? Perhaps if you are adventurous you can also try a monocycle, or perhaps travel somewhere with your partner on a tandem bike.

Bike Parking and Bike Repair

Dienstag, September 1st, 2009

I do like that some – but unfortunately not many – building complexes have underground guarded free bicycle parking lots. Like this one on the East side of Beijing.

Beijing Bike Parking Lot

And I also love all the bike repair stations all over Beijing city. I hope they do not go out of business (like the guy with the white cap in the below picture) with the decreasing number of cyclists seen in Beijing. If everybody would just cycle one day more that would help. So for those not cycling at all: Get on out and try to bicycle in Beijing. Maybe that would help the car drivers to realize how it feels as a cyclist to get cut of by a car and maybe it would improve the driving skills.

Here is just a picture of the shop-to-be across of mine. The work is progressing.

Marathon Runner

Donnerstag, August 20th, 2009

This morning I received a spontaneous call at about 7:40 a.m. from a person that said he knows me and is waiting in front of my door. I was already up but just about to shower. He had participated in the Green Olympics event last year and that was where we had met. He is from Shandong province and cycled to Beijing last year, the event where I also had long distance cycled back to Beijing. He actual does a lot of marathons. He already participated in about 40. He is looking forward to doing more overseas ones. Currently he is on his way to Lhasa for his next marathon. He came to Beijing to board the train to Lhasa tonight. I wish him good luck for the marathon!

The Cyclist and the Marathon Guy

This evening while riding back home at full speed my bike handlebar got hooked into a strap of a handbag of a woman walking on the bike lane which made me fall. I am looking forward to soon importing cool urban bike helmets for the Natooke shop. Then I will start riding with a bike helmet in Beijing daily life.
