It is great to have a steady number of riders show up every time we head out for a ride. this is getting so much fun, despite the temperature still being chilly. We first played in the usual place and then headed out to the Bird’s Nest. We had a flat tire (he skid through the outer tire) along the way. All pictures are uploaded to my webalbum. But here just some images:

This weekend is the CityWeekend Club Fair. All different non profit groups of Beijing were participating in this event and so were we as the Beijing Jugglers Group as well as the Beijing Fixed Gear Bike Group. It was great to see so many friends from the other community clubs. It was great to have Jancy and Peter and Joe and Oli and other friends help at our club table.

Today was also Oli’s birthday. So we bought him a cake:

I had my pink track bike and did some tricks on that fixed gear bike (thanks very much to Jancy for taking these pictures of me):

And then Oli performed for the crowds with his contact juggling:

And also he juggled a few (up to 9) balls. All of the pictures are to be found here

My Beijing fixed gear bike friends and me are in Shanghai. We were sponsored by adidas to go to the 60 year anniversary party of the great sports brand from my hometown Herzogenaurach.
When we arrived in Shanghai we first checked into the Ritz-Carlton Hotel and then went to have some noodles for lunch.

The adidas party was in a huge tent in Pudong. The continuously had graphics projected onto all sides of the tent.

The dress code was original adidas soles and stripes, so mostly everybody was wearing something from adidas. But hardly anybody was as colorful as me:

At this 60 years in 2009 party they had a rap band from Beijing perform.

Then there was a whole lot of adidas fashion show kind of performances (very Asian style). I liked the break dance guys best, even though only 2 of them seemed really good.

Then the night continued with great DJs. I found the Shanghai crowd very bored of everything. They watched but did not really get into it despite all the free champagne. The whole crowd was very quiet. Except me, a few Japanese and some of the Chinese. So the DJs pulled us onto the stage to get the crowd more excited.
I uploaded more pictures to my website: adidas 6009 Party. And my Chinese friends wrote about the event on their blog.
Some of the fixed gear riders in Beijing met up in the bike tunnel between Dongdan and Wangfujing. It is huge and bright and hardly any cyclists coming through.

We had a turnout of 8 fixed gear guys! The Beijing fixie scene is growing! I took quite some pictures and uploaded them to my website. Click here to see the webalbum.

We did some skidding

And practiced backward circles and track stands. I really like Wang Xiao Wei’s all red bike.

And we did some other tricks like jumping off the bike and running next to it. And then also swapping bikes: We did a movie of that and I would love to see it soon. And other tricks:

Finally! We have a forum! It is called chinafixedgear.ning.com All the fixed gear and single speed riders in China can get together! The community is growing in Beijing and the weather is perfect to do rides.

We are still working on having our social network (BBS) more bilingual.
I have done this conversion a while ago but I never posted any pictures. So here is my traditional Flying Pigeon bike converted into a cool fixed gear bike:

I literally took each any every screw of this bike apart, then cleaned everything and screwed it back together. Then I put red hubs and red rims (front is spoked radially) a saddle and new basket, bell and a honky horn. I just cannot fit the road style pedals with cages…
Hmm…, it is because it is just before Chinese New Year? Or is it just due to the icy cold weather with these Siberian winds? Or is it just due to the the lock being old? I went for dinner. I locked my fixed gear bike with 2 Kryptonite locks to a fence and my friend locked his bike (that actually belongs to my German friend) to my frame. After dinner we were not able to open the lock of my friend. The key just refused to go into the hole. It could be because of these freezing temperatures. Or did somebody actually mess with the lock trying to open it? It is common in China that there is theft just before Chinese New Year as everybody needs some nice gifts for their families. Even the cab drivers in Beijing put up a metal cage around them inside the car to protect them from desperate theives before Chinese New Year. Oh, well I will check that lock tomorrow. Maybe it just needs some lubricant.
Today I met my best friends from university. Every year we get together in the place with the most different kind of teas offered in Erlangen – the „Teehaus“. They serve real tea leaves and give you a sand-glass to make sure you take out the leaves at the right moment. Today they were having a brunch buffet so we tried that. It was great as they were serving Italian antipasti, as well as salmon and everything else you could think of for a long breakfast. Alex, Martin and me tried to take a picture of ourselves and these are the results:

Afterwards I went again climbing, then artistic cycling and then to the juggling and acro balance group. It was a fun and long day full of sports and friends. In artistic cycling Paulina showed me again her newly invented „handlebar-kneeing“ that she claims to be really comfortable. I tried it too but it hurts. And I do not think I can do it as beautifully as her.

What a great day of cycling. Our fixed gear friend Mike from Tianjin came just to visit us and ride with us. Unfortunately some of our Beijing fixed gear riders were sick and some had to work. So we ended up riding only with 3 people. While stopping in Jianwai SOHO we were directly spotted by some people as the most fashionable kids on the block. They took our picture and said they have an online street wear magazine. We were amazed „why us?“ but I have the feeling it was just a trick to get our contact details. I cannot enter the site name they provided… 🙁

We then rode to the Drum and Bell Tower of Beijing. On the space between the 2 towers there are always the pedal rickshaw guys standing around. They were fascinated by our bikes. I let them try my bike and as always all they guys and us laughed a lot. They are just not used to fixed gear.

William received his beautiful bike just a few weeks ago from Japan. If anybody is interested in riding fixed gear with us or wanted to learn more about fixed gear bikes, then please join our fixed gear group on facebook.

We were riding the whole day and then when it got dark went to the Olympic village. Mike did a free handed track stand in front of the Bird’s Nest on the Olympic Green. Unfortunately he had to leave at 10:30pm with the high speed train back to Tianjin. I hope we can ride together again soon.
