JisuPK at Bohai or Bust

Samstag, April 3rd, 2010

The Schoolhouse at Mutianyu organization and the China Charity Challenge co-hosted a charity bike event at their Roadhouse near the Great Wall North of Beijing. The event was called „Bohai or Bust„. All of the 100.-RMB registration fee is going to charity to provide a dinner, program and gift packages for the community’s elderly residents of the villages around Bohai and Mutianyu.

Almost 200 hundred people signed up and over half of them came to the meeting point at the TREK shop near Chaoyang Park. The bikes were loaded into 3 trucks and there were 2 huge buses. Unfortunately we encountered some holiday traffic as most companies in China have the coming Monday off.

Charity Ride Beijing Meet Up

In the name of STC Shannon and I had prepared the JisuPK. JisuPK is very fun bicycle event where 2 competitors on bikes attached to stationary rollers race each other in front of a cheering crowd. Typically a race lasts only 30 seconds and the winner is the rider that covers the set distance the quickest. The progress of the race is projected onto a screen so the crowd can get behind their favorite rider. Participants can challenge a friend to a race, race a colleague, race someone from another country, even race their Mum!

Bikes set up for JisuPK

But first everybody set out for their bike rides. There were 4 different proposed routes: 10km, 26km, 60km or for the A riders about 100km. We set out a bit late and as there was a tight schedule the A riders could only do about 85km. But it was still a nice ride. I did not have too much time to take pictures therefore just 2 snapshots from the A ride:

Bike riding over a pass near Mutianyu

This picture I took at the top of Sihai mountain. That is a very great mountain to ride a road bike up.

Samantha Song came out with us. She did not ride bike but stayed at our Natooke shop booth, even though there were not many people until 1pm.

When I arrived back there was a dance exhibition put on by a local troupe of villagers. There was a barbeque going on.

Cyclists after Ride and Food

Then we started the JisuPK. It seems the bike riding in the fresh air and beautiful mountains plus the food made most people very lazy. But we did get some guys to race.

My friend Anthony is planning a bike ride through South China. He has a website called ride2freedom.org and did a post about this event today.

The buses and trucks actually left for Beijing on time at 4:30. And the traffic back into the city was less bad as expected.

Max Flying Banana Fixed Gear Bike

Freitag, April 2nd, 2010

Finally today Max and I worked on building up the fixed gear bike for him. Unfortunately the drop bar he bought required a special stem with 26mm diameter that I did not have. So we temporarily installed a riser bar. He had his wheels built up with one reflective Velocity Deep-V back rim. I really like that rim. Here is how the Flying Banana bicycle of Max looks like without a flash:

And look at the amazing effect when taking a picture with flash. That is the same when the lights of a car shine on the rear rim:

Here are some more pictures of his beautiful new bike.

This afternoon I was doing some bike tricks on a road bike. Unfortunately the second hand road bike of Benedikt – that is still standing around in my shop – is slightly too big for me and especially too long. So I could just do a limited number of bicycle tricks on it. But it was very interesting as in some moments I was on the rolling bike waiting for the pedal to come to my foot and then had to smile when it occurred to me that the road bike is not fixed gear so the pedals do not revolve by themselves.

Pat’s Fixed Gear Bicycle

Donnerstag, April 1st, 2010

Today we finished Pat’s fixed gear bicycle. I like his choice of purple Halo tires and purple chain.

Also the yellow double cages and the white toe strap go well with the frame.

Today we also took a picture of the Natooke pink urban commuter bike for girls that Elaine had helped put together a few weeks ago. It is a very small frame, just 46cm seat tube length which makes it perfect for cute Asian girls.

Mike’s Fixed Gear Natooke Bike

Sonntag, März 28th, 2010

After a long time waiting for us to find a place to repaint a frame Mike finally got his fixed gear bike from my Natooke shop this morning. I like the color combination with the little bits of red.

Saturday at Natooke Bike Store

I actually wanted to go on a nice road bike ride but I had to finish building up 2 bikes in the shop. Cristina and Philippe came to my shop to get the black stems that finally arrived today. But after looking at Cristina’s bike we all agreed that it actually looked better with the silver stem. So we only switched her brake from the right to the left hand side.

Philippe wanted more exchanged, not just the stem and the brake from the left to the right hand side. He changed his style form the drop bar to the aggressively short straight handlebar. I like this style better.

Then a new Beijing fixed gear rider dropped by. I installed carbon looking bar tape on his fixed gear bike. He said that he had donated an old Flying Pigeon bike a few days ago by leaving it unlocked in front of our entrance. I remembered that bike but I had moved it to our neighbors because I thought it might be one of their bikes. Too bad: now it is gone.

Another friend of mine came by on his very interesting vintage Colnago road bike. It has a very strange extra neck extension on the fork. And unfortunately the down tube was broken so it had been welded.

And it is amazing, just 10 days after installing the new shop signs the main one is broken. For another 10 days the company that made the sign had been refusing to drop by. Finally the manager came today and claimed I would need to pay for the repair. I was really upset with him so in the end he said okay he will do it for free. But he did not say when he will do it…

We had dinner with friends at a nice Sichuan restaurant. And then we headed over to the 30th birthday party of Peter as well as the 24th birthday party of Anthony. It seems we missed the great dinner that Peter had cooked but we did not miss the birthday cake.

Nico’s Flying Banana Fixie Bike

Freitag, März 26th, 2010

Some weeks ago Nico fell in love with the one frame we had in our Natooke shop. It is this beautiful Flying Banana track bicycle frame with full chrome plated vintage style front fork.

The rear drop outs are nicely done.

And these old school lugs of this chromoly steel frame are classy with the chrome plating. It just gives the frame a vintage look.

And the logo is only done in glossy finish on the matt frame.

So it was not just Nico, other people coming in the shop really liked this frame. But today was the day, Nico came to change out his current frame to this beautiful one. He kept all his former parts, except for the head set and the stem. So this is how his Flying Banana bike now looks:

And just for the records, this was the second day of the year that we had lunch outside. It is slowly getting warmer and I hope it will not snow again this spring.

Global Times News Article: No gears, but a business license

Montag, März 8th, 2010

Today there were more articles about our Natooke opening party yesterday. The one in the Global Times was written very nice. Here is the link to the original version.

An impromptu street party broke out in Wudaoying Hutong over the weekend to mark the official opening party of Natooke.

The shop has been in place for a while, as a hub for the fixed gear bike and juggling groups that it caters to, but on Sunday the owners decided to celebrate the arrival of their business license in style.

„We thought we’d have the party in spring because it would be warm. It’s going to snow tonight!“ said CEO Ines Brunn. „We hope that there will be more people that get on their bikes in the city and come ride with us. Oh and that more people start juggling!“ she added, before disappearing into the throng.

By early afternoon a juggling workshop was well under way, thanks to the shop’s director, and Beijing juggler Federico Moro, surrounded by a ring of eager learners of all ages.

„It has been great, everyone is really happy. We’re setting up as a good business in this neighborhood, no one else is doing something like this on this street,“ said Moro, after his workshop. According to the juggler, this shop is the first of its kind to sell juggling equipment to the individual practitioner, a concept that hasn’t taken off in China yet. „Juggling is spreading all over the world. In China I want to be here for that and help it to develop,“ he added.

As the learners made their way into the shop to get out of the cold with a few balloon animals, cheers rose up from the crowd as another pair of participants got on to the Goldsprint machine (a kind of bike simulator) to test their biking potential from the comfort of the shop.

As always with an outdoorsy crowd, there was a bit of a green message. The shop was passing out reusable plastic bottles for the crowd and a slogan on a red banner urged everyone to respect the environment.

Vance Wagner, a green conscious friend of Natooke, had popped down to celebrate. „I think this means that the culture of bicycling is becoming cool again,“ he said. „This is another place that provides an alternative mode of transport to cars.“

As the day progressed, the shows grew steadily more and more spectacular, impressing the crowd with a trick bike display and street performance routine. Passersby and friends of the shop alike were also equally happy to take part in toasting to congratulate the shop as champagne was passed round and party poppers were let off.

Judging by the remaining crowd at the end of the day, the little alternative hub in Wudaoying looks set for success for the coming times.

German Newspaper Article about Ines Brunn and her Natooke Bike Shop

Donnerstag, Februar 4th, 2010

Today there was an article in the German Newspaper about my life and how I am following my passion. How I decided to quit my corporate job and become an entrepreneur. It tells the story that even though I am doing something as crazy as a German person opening a bicycle shop in China I am succeeding. That definitely has to do with me being a famous trick cyclist. So not only do I run this fixed gear bike and juggling shop in Beijing but I also still perform around the world with my stunt bicycle shows.

The original article of the Erlanger Nachrichten can be found online. But I also copied the article here so you can directly read it (well, that is if you understand German…).

Von «Wetten, dass . .

Flying Banana Frames

Montag, Januar 18th, 2010

It has been so cold the past weeks in Beijing. Our Natooke shop is in a traditional hutong building and we do not have any proper heating. We did buy some electric heaters and that gives us some warmth near the heater, for example in our office. But the rest of the shop is around 3 degrees Celcius. But today I finally started taking some pictures of some bike parts. I started with the beautiful chromoly Flying Banana frames. I did not take many pictures because my fingers got really cold.
